Ideal Candidate Profile

AWBi seeks a visionary and strategic Executive Director to lead the organization in advancing a long-term vision for Washington’s economy. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in nonprofit leadership, economic development, strategic planning, fundraising and stakeholder engagement. They will be a collaborator, culture builder, and strong communicator who is dedicated to the mission and values of AWB. Working closely with the President and CEO of AWB, Board, staff, volunteers and donors, this executive must be committed to goal achievement through engaged teamwork.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic and forward-thinking executive, with a track record of stellar results working in collaborative organizations. They must be a visible presence throughout the organization and interested in listening to all key stakeholders.

They must also have unquestioned personal integrity, honesty, professionalism, and a positive work ethic. They will have strong presentation and communication skills with an outgoing, personable, and inclusive style, acting as both a connector and catalyzer. The ability to communicate with clarity and motivate people is a critical requirement. The capacity to connect with people at different levels, and the humility to accept shortcomings and the thirst for ongoing growth and development, are also needed.

The ideal candidate will possess a genuine, visible, infectious passion for advancing the mission and reach of the AWB Institute. They will maintain strong executive confidence and presence, even in the face of adversity. This individual should exhibit empathy and have a high “EQ”.

Role Overview

Reporting to the President and CEO of AWB and working closely with a 19-member Board, the AWBI Executive Director will:

• Develop and execute a strategic vision for AWBI’s future growth and impact.

• Oversee AWB Institute staff and contractors.

• Provide executive oversight of AWBI’s signature initiatives, such as Washington in the Making 2040, the Civics Bee, Workforce Portal and Childcare programs.

• Collaborate closely with AWB president & CEO and senior staff.

• Partner with key strategic organizations (business and other) to advance AWBI’s mission.

• Deliver strategic, programmatic and operational goals.

• Drive fundraising and sponsorship development to expand AWBI’s impact, reach and sustainability.

Key Activities

• Serve as a visionary leader and strategic thinker for AWBI, advancing and delivering AWBI strategic and organizational priorities.

• Lead a collaborative and high-performing team, fostering a culture of innovation and impact.

• Ensure financial sustainability through effective program management, budgeting, grant management, and fundraising efforts.

• Effectively communicate with key stakeholders, including business leaders, policymakers, and workforce partners.

• Lead Washington in the Making 2040 programming and annual reporting.

• Oversee grant-funded programs and ensure compliance with deliverables.

• Lead grant reporting, financial oversight, and board engagement activities.

• Ensure effective governance, board development, and operational management of AWBI.

• Develop and implement evaluation metrics to measure program success and areas for improvement.

• Build relationships with community colleges, technical schools and businesses to facilitate the achievement of workforce development goals.

• Support AWBI Board members in advancing the Institute’s strategic agenda.

• Integrate AWBI programs into AWB events and initiatives where appropriate.

• Represent AWBI at public events, legislative sessions, and industry forums.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Master’s preferred).

• Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in a nonprofit, economic development or other strategic stakeholder engagement role.

• Proven track record in fundraising, grant writing, and financial management.

• Strong strategic planning and program development skills.

• Excellent public speaking, communication, and relationship-building abilities.

• Knowledge of workforce development trends, economic research, and business education partnerships.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with CRM and project management tools.

Salary

$130,000 - $170,000 plus strong benefits package
